Updates

David from this entry  (sorry, it's flocked) came back to the beach a couple of weeks ago.  He stated that he still had the dark crystal, and was wondering what to do with it.  I went through the typical litany:  Bad karma.  He'd lose everything important to him.  The cops would hassle him forever.  He turned aside my comments with scorn.

"I don't give a shit about karma, 'cause I figure his was pretty bad if I stole the thing.  Already lost everything.  And I don't care about the cops, either"

"Okay, David," I replied.  "It's about this:  What kind of person do you want to be?  If you want to be who you are right now, then keep it or sell it.  If you want to be someone better, then you need to give it back"

He promised to think about it.  A few days ago he showed up with the crystal, looking to give it back to Jason...who is currently in Arkansas, if rumor has it correctly.  Now he keeps showing up every once in a while, hoping to be able to return it and be the person who he wants to be.

Also, Bear from the Pagoda Drunks is out of jail.  He approached me today as I was getting my cart to pull it down to the space I have.

"Sorry, Bear, I can't pay you to tote it today.  I didn't get client one yesterday"

He looked concerned.  "What about later tonight?" he asked.  As I've stated previously, he helps to break down my stand at the end of the night.

"We'll see, but I can't promise" I replied.

Later, he came weaving drunkenly up to Chana and me at my stand.  When I repeated how I was unsure, he began to rant loudly, stating that I didn't like him anymore, and that he'd obviously been "fired".  I protested.  He continued to rant, then finally took off down the Boardwalk.

As the sun was about to set, I headed to the liquor store to pick up a pack of cigarettes.  This involved passing by Bear, who was hanging out with the marijuana spangers.

"So, you almost ready?" he asked.  I looked at him in shock.

"No.  No, you're not doing this tonight.  You're cut off totally.  You yelled at us today, Bear.  You yelled at two people who have done nothing but treat you with respect and kindness the entire time we've known you.  No.  However drunk you were, whatever you've been through...and I know what you've been through, and respect it...you do not pull that shit.  Ever.  Under any circumstances.  You never work for me again.  Got it?"

I wasn't exactly yelling, but my voice must have been a bit more forceful than my typical calm diplomatic tones, if the dropped jaws of a couple of the spangers were any indication.

Finally, the suspicion was right:  Mike from yesterday's entry did not get bail.  Also, he supposedly has a restraining order on him that does not allow him anywhere near the Boardwalk.
